Jerry Navarro was born May 22nd 1924 in San Jose, Antique. He was a Ramon Roces publications scholar at the University of the Philippines Manila, where he studied in 1947. He transferred the following year to the University of St. Tomas where he majored in painting. In his art studies, Navarro experimented with many different methods of sculptor and mixed media, including incision painting. While in school, Navarro was also an editor for the university newspaper, the Varsitarian. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1951, and later married Filipina sculptor Virgina Ty-Navarro.
Navarro's devotion and practice of art spanned 40 years. He was well known for his abstract paintings in oil and watercolor, his aseenlabges of found objects and metals, and his carved, harwood masks that merge the human and the animal. He also created a series of figurative works inspired from Balinese art and culture. In 1999, Navarro was awarded Philippine National Artist for Painting. That same year he passed away at age of 75.
